**Before Beginning Ayat al-Kursi** In Ayat al-Kursi, Allah Almighty introduces Himself to His servants. Here, we see gathered together the fundamental truths that inform us about Who He is, His power, His knowledge, and His sovereignty. For this reason, we should regard Ayat al-Kursi not merely as a verse to be recited and passed over, but as a criterion for knowing Allah and establishing our thoughts regarding Him upon correct foundations. When contemplating Allah, we reflect within the principles taught by this verse: that He is _Al-Hayy_ (the Ever-Living) and _Al-Qayyum_ (the Sustainer of all); that nothing can encompass Him; that He knows all things; that the heavens and the earth belong to Him; and that all power lies in His Hands. Our faith, our thoughts concerning Allah, our trust in Him, and our devotion to Him are shaped in the light of these truths. **Al-Baqarah 2:255** ### Ayat al-Kursi **اللَّهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّومُ** Allâh! Lâ ilâha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), Al-Hayyul-Qayyum (the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists). **لَا تَأْخُذُهُ سِنَةٌ وَلَا نَوْمٌ** Neither slumber nor sleep overtakes Him. **لَهُ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الْأَرْضِ** To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. **مَن ذَا الَّذِي يَشْفَعُ عِندَهُ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِهِ** Who is he that can intercede with Him except with His Permission? **يَعْلَمُ مَا بَيْنَ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَمَا خَلْفَهُمْ** He knows what happens to them (His creatures) in this world, and what will happen to them in the Hereafter. **وَلَا يُحِيطُونَ بِشَيْءٍ مِّنْ عِلْمِهِ إِلَّا بِمَا شَاءَ** And they will never compass anything of His Knowledge except that which He wills. **وَسِعَ كُرْسِيُّهُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ** His Kursî extends over the heavens and the earth. **وَلَا يَئُودُهُ حِفْظُهُمَا** And He feels no fatigue in guarding and preserving them. **وَهُوَ الْعَلِيُّ الْعَظِيمُ** And He is the Most High, the Most Great. ### A Short Reflection Allah introduces Himself to His servants in this verse. We learn who He is, how complete His knowledge and power are, and how everything belongs to Him.
